Heavy gunfire and explosions have been reported by eyewitnesses at the scene of a terrorist attack in the Riverside area of Nairobi, Kenya.

DusitD2 is an upmarket hotel contained within a large compound which also houses international companies such as Pernod Ricard and Cellulant, among others.

People were seen fleeing from the scene as those trapped inside used Twitter to report “terrorists wearing black fatigues heavily armed” and “please help us we are hiding.”

Regional terrorist group Al-Shabaab have claimed responsibility for the attack, with today marking the third anniversary of one of the group’s most deadly clashes with Kenyan forces in El Adde, Somalia.

“I heard a large explosion coming from the direction of the multi-storey car park,” an employee at a UK-based company located in the compound, told New African.

“We then heard multiple rounds of automatic gunfire and were ordered out of the office by our security adviser. We ran together with hundreds of other workers through a rear gate exit, over a small bridge and towards neighbouring apartments.”
