For almost 50 years, the New African has been the world’s biggest‐selling, English language Pan‐African magazine with pioneering journalism that puts the African perspective on international reporting about the continent. We offer an invaluable and an unparalleled view to the world’s most diverse continent.

We are looking to recruit a proficient, all‐rounder journalist as Assistant Editor to join us in continuing and developing our successful journey.

Location: London, UK Salary: DoE

The ideal candidate must:

  • Have a good nose for African and African Diaspora news and content befitting a broad pan‐African audience;
  • Have an extensive knowledge of African political, social and economic affairs;
  • Have excellent and analytical feature writing, as well as editing, subbing and proofing skills and ability to turn round freelance copy from a diverse group of writers;
  • Be able to assist the Editor in the commissioning and creating high quality, engaging and exclusive articles that help ensure the continued high profile status the New African enjoys as a leading Pan­‐African magazine;
  • Be able to work under the direction and in conjunction with the Editor, to ensure deadlines and editorial schedules are met and adhered to;
  • Be able to liaise with contributors ­‐ both regular and freelancer ‐ and ensure quality copy is filed on time;
  • Be familiar with magazine production process, and have a strong news sense for both online and monthly news cycles;
  • Be flexible and able to cope with deadline pressures;
  • Have excellent verbal and communication skills and social etiquette;
  • Have a confident and outgoing personality;
  • Be professional and presentable;
  • Have the ability and desire to work as part of a small but effective editorial
